to nbc news justice correspondent pete williams. pete, thank you very much and thank you for getting things right today. i want to ask you what we do know about how the investigation's developed and how you would characterize the progress that is being made, given there was no arrest today, there is no single identified suspect, but nevertheless, it does seem like the last 24 hours have been quite good from the standpoint of progressing through this investigation. >> well, i think they consider it very promising, and here's the reason. they've been asking for pictures, they have what they believe are pretty important pictures that show from several different angles a young man at the second -- at the scene of the second bombing talking on a cell phone, setting down a backpack, and then dashing away just before that bomb explodes. they don't know who it is. they have a good look at that person, and they are eager to do three things, figure out who that person is, find them, and talk to them. and we are told they haven't done any of those things yet, but there are several angles that t
's justice correspondent pete williams following overnight developments in the investigation. pete, good morning. it seems there is no clearer picture as to who may be behind this. >> i think that's certainly true although there is high hope that they will be able to answer that shortly. they know for certain the attack involved two bombs, but many other packages found on the street were deemed suspicious and destroyed and that took a lot of time last night. there were many packages to check because after the explosions officials say many people simply dropped what they were carrying and ran, leaving their packages behind. there were conflicting accounts whether investigators found two unexploded bombs. this morning a senior law enforcement official says there were no unexploded devices, just the two that went off. several officials say the bombs that went off included shrapnels to multiply the injuries, bebes and ball bearings. investigators are investigating video to see if they can see individuals placing the packages. there is a video from the back carrying two backpacks but it's too
'll get to nbc justice correspondent pete williams. as i turn to you, this news conference is going on, we know that officials did conduct two bomb sweeps in the area yesterday, one before the race and then one around the finish line they said about an hour before runners started to cross the finish line. what else can you tell us? >> despite the confusion overnight, they did not find more than two bombs, the two that went off, the confusion comes from the fact that as the bombs went off, people dropped packages they were holding and ran away. when police arrived on scene, they had all of these packages they had to check. they didn't take a lot of time. they simply destroyed them if there were any questions. some confusion last night that there were some unexploded devices. now they say that's not the case. as for revere, an apartment belonging to a student here who was 20 years old from saudi arabia, he was seen running from the scene, authorities say they did not find anything that search to indicate that he had any involvement in the bombing. he's been questioned all night. the interest
public. let's get to the latest with pete williams. i want to start with the two photos, the before and after of a bag next to a mailbox. how important are investigators thinking these could be? >> to be determined, i think. they are looking at this picture and similar pictures to see if that's how the bombs were placed. they're sort of contradictory photo evidence here about whether that's where they went because the after doesn't seem to show a lot of damage, but it's quite clear that the bombs themselves were not busted up into little tiny pieces and the pictures we're seeing show some large pictures of the cook er themselves. let me show you right here, you can see the brand name. inok. of one of the pressure cookers and on the pictures that show the batteries, this is a chinese made battery and these are also wires that were made in china. now, that kind of lead is very important because what they'll do now is to figure out who sells these pressure cooker, where would they have been bought. were they sold in the boston area? what about the wire? are there commonalities? where w
